   The axolotl keeps its larval form for life, holding on to its feathery external gills instead of transforming into a land-dwelling adult the way most salamanders do.^[1]

   Axolotls can regrow lost body parts - including whole limbs, the tail, and even parts of the heart and brain - which makes them a favourite of scientists studying regeneration.^[1]

   In the wild the axolotl lives naturally only in the lake system near Mexico City, where it is now critically endangered.^[1]
